Dunque, sono non so quanti anni che le Corti Islamiche somale, espressione di gruppi integralisti sunniti, ammazzano musulmani a destra e sinistra - apparentemente, per il peccato di non essere abbastanza integralisti o abbastanza sunniti, o di non esserlo nella maniera giusta; che tollerano pirati nei porti da loro formalmente amministrati; che beneficiano anche, almeno in parte, dei proventi delle attività di questi pirati. Sono anni che le Corti tollerano il sequestro di navi con equipaggio in tutto o in parte musulmano, con carico destinato a, o di proprietà di, musulmani, e in alcuni casi navi appartenenti a Paesi musulmani come lo Yemen. E per le Corti andava tutto bene.

Poi questi pirati che fanno? Ti sequestrano una petroliera saudita, ti sequestrano.

E le Corti Islamiche, che finora se ne sono sempre fottute, e che sono, per carità, espressione profonda delle istanze del popolo somalo, una forza locale, autonoma, assolutamente non eterodiretta, appena qualcuno tocca gli interessi dell'Arabia Saudita minacciano l'iradiddio. Insomma, l'iradiallah. Mica perchè abbiano particolari legami con l'Arabia Saudita, percaritadiallah: è per il principio, non si toccano le cose di proprietà di Paesi musulmani.

Ok, let me get this straight: the Islamic Courts of Somalia, as we all know a coalition of Sunni integralist groups, have been slaughtering other Muslims for I don't know how many years - apparently because they were not integralist, or not Sunni, enough or in the right way; they have tolerated for years the presence of pirates in the ports they formally administer; they have benefited all this time from a cut of the pirates' revenue. For years they have tolerated the hijacking of ships crewed in part or entirely by Muslims, whose cargo belonged to, or was destined for, Muslims, and in some cases belonged to Muslim countries such as Yemen. And it was fine as far as they were concerned.

And what did these nasty pirates do? They went and hijacked a Saudi oil tanker.

And the Islamic Courts, which until this moment hadn't given a rat's testicle, and are, of course, an expression of the Somali people, a local, autonomous force with no external powers directing their actions, changed tack as soon as someone touched Saudi interests, and are getting ready to bring God's - I mean Allah's - wrath on the heads of the pirates. Not, mind you, because of any special relationship with Saudi Arabia, perish the thought. Just because, well, it's forbidden to steal from Muslim countries.
